Description

Looking around New Zealand today we see spectacular landscapes: high mountains, rolling hills, plains, lakes and rivers, rocky shores and sandy beaches.

We are familiar with the outline shape of the country we see it every day on weather maps. But the landscape and the shape of the country have not always existed in their present form. In fact, at one stage in its history, the New Zealand landmass lay almost completely under the sea. So how was the New Zealand we know today formed? Great forces have created the New Zealand landscape and continue to shape it today. Mountains are being thrust up and volcanoes are throwing out new lava. The country is being slowly twisted and squeezed, so that the land is being torn apart, pushed up or dragged down. As the mountains rise, rain, wind, snow and ice are wearing them down again, and rivers are carrying their loads of sediment to the sea.

In this book, the author explains how our planet was formed and whats inside it, and how New Zealand arrived at its present location on earths surface. Discover the forces that constantly remodel the country and create its spectacular landscapes. The text is accompanied by diagrams and colour photographs of interesting and important landforms in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Wild Series is aimed at 8-14 year-old readers. Other titles in the New Zealand Wild series are: Bats, Penguins, Rocky Shore, The Tuatara, Whales and Dolphins.

Brian OFlaherty is keenly interested in the New Zealand environment and has written books for Reed on natural history topics: Rocky Shore (shortlisted for the Elsie Locke Award at the LIANZA Childrens Book Awards 2002) and Shaping New Zealand for the New Zealand Wild series; Rocky Shore and Tuatara for the Nature Kids series. Brian grew up in Rotorua, where he spent most of his spare time enjoying the Bay of Plenty coast and central North Islands lakes, bush and mountains while trout fishing, whitebaiting, surfcasting, pig hunting, rabbit shooting, possum trapping and deer stalking. After a degree in philosophy and literature at Victoria University and teacher training in London, he spent six years teaching in Tokyo, where he also began writing. He pursued this interest after returning to New Zealand, and has worked as a book editor, on educational, fiction and non-fiction titles, both in-house and freelance, since 1987. He lives in Auckland with his partner and daughter.
