Making Stories : How ten Australian novels were written order quantity
  +   -

NZ$ 29.95 each
Paperback
Author: Kate Grenville & Sue Woolfe
Good writers make writing look easy - but is it? Anyone learning to write should be encouraged by "Making Stories" - it shows that even great novelists come to their books by a long and uncertain process. The book shows ten acclaimed Australian authors at work, painstakingly constructing their books from rough notes, dimly-glimpsed ideas, and trial and error. By referring to extracts from drafts and published versions of their novels, each author candidly discusses how she or he works, taking the reader step by step through the creative process to share the invisible hours of toil that shape a work of fiction. All faced problems and doubts, and solved them in sometimes startling ways. The authors are both widely experienced as teachers of literature and creative writing. Sue Woolfe is the author of the acclaimed novel "Painted Woman" and of textbooks for English classes about literature and language. Kate Grenville is the author of ... more

The Trouble with Poetry order quantity

NZ$ 27.95 each
Paperback
Author: Billy Collins
The "Trouble with Poetry" is the new collection from probably the most popular poet in the entire planet, and finds everyone's favourite contemporary Pre-Socratic in as funny and wise (and sometimes joyfully silly) form as ever. Billy Collins's tone is inimitable. Drawled and knowing, yet without a hint of world-weariness or cynicism, he fearlessly addresses the reader as friend and intimate - and comrade, inviting them to square up to the various collective crises of the bald ape in the 21st century. Collins remains the only poet who can write about the next-to-nothing of our lives, the little boredoms, habits and frustrations of our daily and domestic existence, revealing their true importance and meaning - and demonstrating that the same historical and cosmic forces bear upon them as upon the great events of the age. 'Billy Collins is one of my favourite poets in the world.' - Carol Ann Duffy. 'I'd follow this man's mind anywhere.' ... more

Ballistics : Poems order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 28.00 each
Paperback
Author: Billy Collins
It is no understatement to say that Billy Collins has found poetry a whole new audience across the English-speaking world. No poet writing today insists on such open, direct and courteous engagement with the reader, and no poet has shown the common experience to be such an astonishing and singular one. Collins' gift is to make the reader believe that everything is unfolding in real time and in living speech; his poetry always has the sheen and vibrancy of the present moment.

While Ballistics addresses the most grave and serious of subjects - death and love, solitude and aging - Collins' light touch and lighter spirit never desert him. Even in his darkest verses, Collins never fails to remind us of the sheer miracle, comedy and strangeness of our simply being here.

Sam Hunt is New Zealand's best-known poet. For almost 40 years he has been writing, reading and performing poetry, touring New Zealand constantly and reading his poems in pubs, theatres, schools and many other venues. No other poet in New Zealand has managed to make a living by performing their poems, and it says much about the affection with which Sam is regarded in New Zealand that he has continued to do this for so long. Painted Poems : One artist - 20 Poems order quantity

NZ$ 35.00 each
Paperback
Author: Eion Stevens
In Painted Poems painter Eion Stevens has responded to 20 New Zealand poems -- poems from poets as diverse as Jenny Bornholdt and Katherine Mansfield, James K Baxter and Cilla McQueen -- with an intelligent playfulness. Encountering the paintings alongside their companion poems is a thought-provoking and enriching experience. Steven's witty visual language, his ability to find meanings in simple forms, is startling. For some viewers, the poems will read like translations of the paintings, for others the paintings will act as alert readings of the poems. Here is an energetic and intellectual interchange between Stevens and the range of poets he responds to. Steven's open ended narrative devices mean that viewers will come back to his work again and again, reading their own worlds in the scenes. Each painting seems in essence to be an attempt to get a fix on a haunting, story-telling image. A lovely book to hold, to read, to ... more
