About Us

WELCOME

April 2007 saw Moby Dickens' Books change ownership. A newly designed logo retains the whale motif, and identifies us with the history of whaling on the Kapiti Coast.

Jo Barker, owner manager, Kath and Carole make up the Moby Dickens' team.

Jo has lived on the Kapiti Coast for some 20 years. Prior to buying Moby Dickens' she was sole administrator at the Mahara Gallery, Waikanae. Here she made a number of contacts not only with local artists, painters, writers and musicians, but also a wider arts fraternity. This is evident in her selection of non-fiction for adults and her interest in New Zealand artists - whom she promotes.

Carole, a trained school teacher, has a sound knowledge of our stock of children's literature and is able to advise and help individuals and schools with quality selection.

Moby Dickens' prides itself in specializing in children's reading, educational aids and hands on learning material, as well as CDs.

We aim to provide a personal service, and a friendly bookshop atmosphere, where you can browse at your leisure, sit down and put your nose in a book.

If you have a request for a book which we may not currently stock, we are always happy to source it for you.

We incorporate the Paraparaumu Beach PostCentre and can attend to your postal requirements promptly and efficiently.

The emphasis in this work is on visual recognition of species, and as such each entry is made up of a large image of the species, overlaid with the most obvious identifying features indicated. Other information includes at what depth a species will be found, its breeding and spawning patterns, and common, scientific and Maori names. There is also a map that indicates what areas around the New Zealand coastline the species will be found, and thumbnail images of species that might be confused with each entry. Jorge, who lives in Auckland, has produced a simple, user-friendly guide that will give assistance to those who fish, whether ... more
